He is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc and Vice-Chairman of Guaranty Trust Bank (Ghana) Limited.
He was Deputy Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer for 12 years before becoming Managing Director of the Bank in August 2002. He has been involved in general Management of the Bank’s operation with special emphasis and responsibility for asset management and liability generation. He is also the Divisional Head for the Bank’s Corporate Services Division, which covers Financial Control and Strategy, Human Resources, Systems and Control and Risk Management Groups.
Tayo’s professional working experience has seen him working with several financial institutions. He began with the Central Bank of Nigeria in Calabar where he did his National Youth Service (1977-1978). He worked with Chase Merchant Bank Nigeria Ltd (later renamed Continental Merchant Bank) between 1981and 1988. He was at Prime Merchant Bank Ltd for a short stint between 1988 and 1989 where he was Assistant General Manager and Head of the Financial Services Unit of the Bank. In 1989, he set up a non-bank financial institution; First Marina Trust Limited, which he ran for a year before setting up Guaranty Trust Bank Plc.
Tayo holds a first degree in Business Administration from the University of Lagos and an MBA with special concentration on International Business from the Graduate School of Management, University of California, Los Angeles, USA. His professional education includes Credit and Relationship Management training at Chase Manhattan Bank Institute for International Banking, New York, USA (1982-1983).
He has also attended numerous professional advancement courses at reputable institutions around the world, some of which include the International Institute for Management and Development (IMD), Switzerland; INSEAD, France; and Cambridge University, England.
A member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), Tayo is widely traveled and lectures regularly at various professional institutions, which include the Lagos Business School, and the Chartered Institute of Bankers, just to name a few. He is a Director of Asset & Resources Management Limited (ARM), ARM Trustees Limited, FATE Foundation and several other companies Guaranty Trust Bank (Gambia) Limited, Guaranty Trust Bank (Sierra Leone) and Guaranty Trust Bank (Liberia) Limited. He holds the national honour of the Member of the Federal Republic, MFR. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (FCIB).
He recently won the prestigious African Banker of the Year Award for 2008.
