He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors and is the Ghanaian Shareholder of Guaranty Trust Bank (Ghana) Limited.
Educated at the Ahmadiya Secondary School, Kumasi Ghana, Alhaji left Ghana for the United States of America in 1969 after his secondary education. In the United States, he joined Cowen and Company at Battery Park Plaza, Wall Street in New York where he worked for a number of years. Savings derived from his employment were utilized in the establishment of a taxi hire business. Through the accumulation of proceeds from this business, Alhaji Ibrahim purchased a fleet of tankers from Nottingham in the United Kingdom to start a transport business in Ghana in January 1975. He also set up another company which established a Bicycle Assembly plant in the northern part of Ghana. Under his leadership, both businesses thrived. Alhaji then ventured into commodity trading, which eventually made him one of the largest importers and suppliers of rice, sugar and oil in Ghana. Today, the companies under Alhaji have become a conglomerate which bears the name Dara Salam Group, and it includes a real estate firm (Dara Salam Estates Ltd.), a brokerage firm (Capital Alliance Company Ltd.), a pole treatment firm (Busi and Stephenson (Ghana) Ltd.) and Court Gardens Hotel. Alhaji has in the past held a number of high profile positions in reputable organizations:
- Former Chairman/Director of Madison General Insurance Ghana Limited (now called Metropolitan Insurance Company);
- Former Chairman/Director, Strategic African Securities Company Limited;
- Former Chairman/Director, J.L. Morrison, Son & Jones Ghana Limited;
- Former Chairman/Director, Hume Fulgrip (producers of sewerage and pressure pipes for water);
- Former Chairman/Director, Precast and Spun(Concrete producers of precast elements);
- Former Chairman/Director, Ready Mix Concrete Limited
- Former Captain of the Accra Polo Club.
He has in the past, served as a member of the First Advisory Body appointed by the President of the African Development Bank (ADB) to advise on the modalities for extending credit to the private sector. Alhaji was also very instrumental in the establishment of some institutions in Ghana, notably Meridian Bank (now The Trust Bank), Wade Adams Construction (now Skanska Jensen) etc. He is the Chairman of the Presidential Commission of the University of Development Studies, Tamale, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) of the University of Ghana, Legon and also a Trustee member of the prestigious Millennium Excellence Awards. |
